ABOUT TEAM ASKEW
Team Askew Inc. is a community-based nonprofit organization that uses sports as a
pathway to education, career readiness, mental wellness, and economic stability. Our
integrated program model serves youth ages 8–18 and young adults ages 18–30, with a
special focus on young fathers, aspiring student-athletes, and underserved families in
Washington, DC and surrounding communities.
Our Programs

Youth Sports Development
Focus: Basketball (primary), with opportunities to expand into other sports

Services Include:
• Daily or weekly basketball training sessions
• Skill development, conditioning, and fundamentals
• Team practices, leagues, and tournaments
• Character education: discipline, teamwork, accountability
• Academic check-ins and mentorship during sports sessions

Outcomes:
• Improved physical health and confidence
• Increased school attendance and engagement
• Positive peer relationships and leadership development
• Safe, structured after-school and weekend programming
Youth Career Development
(Ages 12–18)
Focus: Preparing youth for life beyond sports while supporting athletic goals

• Career exploration workshops (sports & non-sports careers)
• Guest speakers (college athletes, coaches, professionals)
• Resume basics and interview preparation (age-appropriate)
• College readiness support (NCAA eligibility, recruiting basics)
• Life skills: time management, communication, goal setting
Special Athletic Support:
• Guidance for student-athletes pursuing high school and college basketball
• Exposure to AAU, prep school, and college recruiting pathways
• Academic accountability to remain eligible for athletics

• Stronger preparation for college or vocational pathways
• Athletes understand both sports and education requirements
Young Adult Workforce Development
(Ages 18–30)
Focus: Employment, stability, and long-term career growth
Target Population:
• Young adults facing barriers to employment
• Young fathers seeking stable work to support their families

• Job readiness training (resume writing, job applications)
• Soft skills training (workplace behavior, communication)
• Job placement assistance and employer connections
• Ongoing coaching to help participants maintain employment
• Referrals to training programs and certifications

Documented Results:

Social Emotional Learning (SEL)
Focus: Addressing emotional well-being alongside performance and employment

Services Include:
• Mental health check-ins embedded in sports and workforce programs
• Group discussions on stress, anger management, and coping skills
• Referrals to licensed mental health professionals when needed
• Safe spaces for youth and young adults to talk openly
• Emphasis on breaking stigma around mental health, especially for men and athletes

CEO/OWNER
Michael Askew’s pedigree speaks for itself. Michael was a star basketball player at Virginia State University earning 3 straight selections to the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) all-conference team, all conference tournament team selection, and achieved 1,000+ points in a career caped off with his induction into the VSU Sports Basketball Hall of Fame in 2018.
After his stellar career at VSU, which allowed him to earn his degree in Sports Management. Michael holds both a USA Gold Basketball certification and is a certified strength and conditioning coach through International Sports Science Association (ISSA).

Michael is the founder of Team Askew, a Northern Virginia based 501c 3 nonprofit youth basketball organization with a mission to function a model youth basketball

Team Askew Volleyball
Team Askew’s Youth Volleyball Training Program is designed to introduce and develop fundamental volleyball skills in a fun, structured, and supportive environment. Our goal is to build confidence, teamwork, and athletic ability in youth through high-quality instruction and mentorship.
Program Highlights:
